Between Sundays Listening Circles

Dear Members & Friends,

I want to take a moment to update you about the work of this church. We’ve completed the Listening Circles & survey. We’ve also assembled a team to Synthesize from the Listening Circles to evaluate these findings & make proposals to the Board by mid-October.

I’d like to thank everyone who came to the Listening Circles, completed the survey and especially the Synthesizers who are taking on a difficult task. I’d especially like to thank Carolyn Briggs, Janette Daniel-Whitney & David Henkel for their time & expertise as Listening Circle facilitators & helping us all through this process.

I’d also like to thank another group of volunteers who’s charge went far beyond what we initially expected. Thank you to Francesca Ferrera, Susan Franzblau, Don Henniger & Yukio Okano for giving up time with family & activities to work on the Interim turned Contract Minister search. Your work creating an extensive Congregational Record, interviewing, listening to many sermons & checking references was one that I greatly appreciate.

We’ve worked hard for 6 months on this task & now it is complete. Based on their recommendation, the Board has hired Contract Minister Pastor Erik Halseth to begin October 1st. Pastor Erik comes to us with rich experience since graduating from Starr King School for the Ministry, having served the UU congregations in Livermore and Canoga Park, where he provided vibrant worship, pastoral care, and nurtured community life. Beyond the pulpit, Erik has also walked alongside families in times of transition as a hospice chaplain with a Jewish hospice, bringing compassion and presence to some of life’s most tender moments. While in seminary at Starr King, he served as Coordinator of Religious Education at the Santa Paula church.

In addition to his Master of Divinity, Erik also holds an MBA—a combination that, as he likes to joke, means he can both preach about the meaning of life and balance a budget. He sees this as more than a quip: he believes that the skills of strategic thinking, stewardship, and organizational care can serve a congregation’s spiritual health just as much as its financial well-being.

With warmth, humor, and a deep sense of calling, Pastor Erik is excited to join the Ventura UU community as together we imagine new ways of living our faith in service to one another and the world. You can meet Erik & his family at the Auction October 4th, just another good reason to come. He’ll be in attendance at church on October 5th & his first day in the pulpit is October 12th. However, he is already jumping in & has attended a Worship committee meeting & is getting up to speed on the Board processes.

I know you will all provide him a warm welcome.

In Peace,
Gina Norstedt, Board President

GRATITUDE FOR GENEROSITY

This April, we at UUCV remind everyone that we are grateful for the gifts of time, talent, and treasure that our members and friends give to our church home. It is pledge season, but that is not my focus, here. I do hope that you can pledge generously.

I first invite you, yes, any of you, to take five to ten minutes any time you are at the church campus just to do a little meditative weeding in our parking islands and especially around where our native wildflowers grow. We don’t want to have to mow those flowers down along with the weeds. (Spring has its shadow side!)

This 5-10 minute task, multiplied by our numbers, can make a lot of progress. Be a multiplier.

If you weed on a random day, feel free to put the weeds at the nearest curb. They will be picked up, be assured.

As I ask for your help, I also send gratitude to the volunteers who have been working diligently on keeping up with the grounds, They know who they are, and they need for all of us to pitch in to help, especially as we spiff up to host the Pacific Southwest Service Area Assembly, April 26-28. Think of this as a District Assembly. We come together with UUs from throughout the Southwest There are a lot of UUCV volunteers involved in helping to make this event a success. These are the ways that our community is supporting REGISTERED ATTENDEES. Register here.

– Don’t Fret, our house ukelele band, will provide background music and sing-along opportunities Friday evening.
– Michael Akseven and Susan Franzblau are coordinating home-stays for UUs who register.
– Susan Franzblau is also developing a list of hotels within a variety of price ranges for visitors.
– Martha Kazlo is especially interested in getting people signed up or being able to attend the Saturday entertainment from Emma’s Revolution.
– Michael Akseven and David Henkel are also coordinating the hospitality bars. Don’t forget that bottle donations are needed and very welcome.
– Our coffee, tea, and bagel ministry is on board and ready to serve.
– Our Caring Committee has agreed to assist in preparation for the continental breakfasts, Saturday and Sunday Mornings.
– We will provide adventure! Kris Langabeer and Deb Menzies will lead an expedition to the Ventura Settling Ponds (birding and . . .) , Saturday afternoon.
– Someone named Kitty is working at making sure that technology works for this event, and she is coordinating with Brian Fortune (staff) and other volunteers to help make this happen.
– Our Director of Family Ministry, Lily Rappaport, is helping to coordinate a simultaneous Youth Con.
– Making this happen does not happen without the administrative skills of our Church Administrator, Jennifer Luce.
– The event is supported by folks from Chalice UU (Conejo Valley), especially former UUCV participant Bill Damerell.

A final note, just to clarify, DO I NEED TO REGISTER TO ATTEND IF I AM ALREADY A UUCV MEMBER? Yes, our church campus is a venue, but we are not the sponsors. The de Benneville Camp Board sponsors this event and has significant expenses to make this event available to UUs throughout the district.

Sign up! Represent!
Jim Merrill, UUCV Board President

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura has had a Committee on Ministry (CoM) in one form or another since the gathered community’s inception. Many of us, however, will benefit from knowing a bit more about our CoM, which does the holy work of helping our church community remain in covenant.

Committees on Ministry serve various roles throughout our Unitarian Universalist tradition. Our own former Assistant Minister, the Rev. David Pyle, has written a description of the various roles that Committees on Ministry play within our UU governance practices.

https://www.uua.org/leaderlab/forming-committee-ministry

There are many different models for Committees on Ministry. Ours at UUCV has primarily focused on conflict resolution, between individuals in conflict among the membership, with concerns between staff and congregants, and with concerns about the overall ministry of the church, itself. The CoM at UUCV is, by and large, a problem-solving, mediating body that seeks to help our entire congregation remain in community with one another.

We are a covenantal people: that is at the heart of what the Committee on Ministry helps to support. Often, a concern brought before the CoM can be resolved with a phone call or email or two to clarify issues. Sometimes the work is deeper.

Because the Committee on Ministry’s work is sometimes tender work, it is usually confidential, for it addresses issues concerning people we hold dear. We must bless and thank the work that the members of the Committee on Ministry hold.

And because of the holy and tender work that the Committee on Ministry does, it is not an open committee for all volunteers. Its membership is comprised of the Senior Minister and customarily four standing members. When vacancies arise, the remaining members consider who might best be suited to support our congregation in remaining in covenant. They submit nominations for new members to the Board of Trustees, as representatives of the congregation, for approval. The hard holding of confidentiality and compassion is a special charge.

Our common understanding of right relationship calls upon each other to speak directly with another when we feel harm. When that does not work, the professional staff and the CoM are there to assist. The membership of the Committee on Ministry changes. It has one consistent email address: com@uuventura.org

Finally!
I get to be the Minister in Residence at Camp de Benneville Pines this summer – at Family Camp from July 21-27.  This is something that’s been in the works since before the pandemic, and finally(!) the timing works.

Camp de Benneville, which we fondly just shorten to Camp, is our UU camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. Nestled among the pines, scattered with chalice symbols everywhere, Camp is a spiritual home for so many UUs from the southwest part of the country. It is a place for our folks to connect with our faith and with each other, year after year.

Camp has also been struggling mightily for the last four years, what with a pandemic shut down, fires that burned right up to the edges, and debris flowing in the rains that followed the fires. This makes me all the happier to serve as the minister at one of our summer camps.

I hope that many UU Ventura families will join me. Camp defines family very broadly, so all are welcome. Family Camp still fills up fast, so we will be sure to let you know when registration opens. I encourage you all to consider going to camp at some point this year – maybe more than once!

Upcoming camps to consider:
The Women’s Retreat on May 3-5. There is already a group planning on this one.
The UU Men’s Fellowship on April 19-21
     June 30-July 6 – Elementary Summer Camp
July 7-13 – Junior High Camp
     July 14-20 Senior High Camp

All are amazing ways to build our youth connection to our faith and each other. Also, our ‘Cluster Camp’ with nearby UU congregations is on September 27-29. In between all of that there are also artists camp, music camp, Thanksgiving camp, yoga camp. (To keep up with them all, you can always check the post in our online newsletter, UUCV This Week.)

We do have church funds that can help folks pay for camp registration, so please ask if that will help you make it. Let’s make it a great year for UU Ventura at Camp de Benneville Pines!

In faith,
Rev. Dana

UUCV's Rev. Dana Worsnop smilling

Dear Ones,

The December crush is full upon us.
Some of us adore it.
Some despise it.
Some are loneliest at this time of year.
Some manage to tap into the love, magic, and mystery.

None of us are alone in whatever we are feeling.

I send you warm holiday, holy day wishes through it all.
I invite you into the wholeness of the season – joy, the overwhelm, the quiet, the raucous celebrations.

I invite you to church on Christmas Eve, which is on a Sunday this year!
So, we will have a 10 am all generations service Jingle All the Way, exploring the Unitarian origins of that favorite holiday song. There will be bells to jingle for all. At 5:30, we will have a traditional Lessons and Carols service Making Room, when we will make room for Christmas in our hearts, and then all head home to await Santa.

Both services will also be Zoomed and streamed on YouTube.
For those joining from afar, here’s how you can prepare:
For the morning service, bring something to jingle along with.
In the evening, make sure you have a candle, and be ready to turn down your lights for singing Silent Night.

Our collection at both services will be for the Lift Up Your Voice to End Homelessness Motel Fund which helps pay for motel rooms for people who are left out in the cold, at Christmas and through the year.

I was one who leaned more to the dislike of Christmas and all its fanfare, until I found a UU church, that is. I love the way we celebrate this holiday. I love being with you all on Christmas Eve.

So come with your whole self in the morning or the evening or both!

Warmest holiday wishes to you all!
Your grateful minister,
Rev. Dana
UUCV's Rev. Dana Worsnop smilling

Good People,

One of the enduring legacies of the UU Church of Ventura will be its advocacy for our unhoused neighbors, its influence over policy and practice on issues of homelessness, and direct assistance to people in need.

Under the auspices of Lift Up Your Voice to End Homelessness, one of the centerpieces of our work has been the hosting and organizing of a Memorial Service for our Homeless Neighbors. The service honors all the souls who died in Ventura County while living without shelter. Too often they have been forgotten and overlooked in life, and so we do what we can to honor their memory.

For more than 15 years, this service (inspired by the Longest Night tradition that began in 1990) has been held in Ventura on the weekend closest to the Winter Solstice. For the last three years, a twin service has been held in Oxnard as well, sponsored by the City and faith community of Oxnard.

The 2023 Longest Night Memorial Services for our Homeless neighbors will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 3:30 pm in Ventura’s Plaza Park and on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 3:30 pm in Oxnard’s Plaza Park.

These services honor the lives of those who died without shelter and offer solace to their family and friends, as well as to their unhoused companions. We read the names of those who have died, ringing a bell and lighting a candle for each.

Even as we honor the lives we have lost, the memorials also serve to raise awareness of the larger issues of homelessness and the plight of those who are still struggling to stay alive without shelter. There are many reasons why people reach this point in their lives. Many more people than we know live on the edge, and then are pushed over it by economic or medical tragedies.

This undertaking needs many hands to bring it into existence each December. We collect clothing, create headstones, need ‘day of’ help setting up, and have opportunities for youth to create items (like hygiene packs) to distribute at the memorial. If you would like to help with the Ventura Longest Night service, please contact Gale Naylor at galejnaylor@gmail.com. If you would like to help with the Oxnard Longest Night service, please contact Yukio Okano at yukio.okano@yahoo.com.

Perhaps the most significant way to help out with this service is simply to show up, honor the lives we have lost, and open your heart to the humanity—and heartbreak—of our neighbors living without shelter.

The number of homeless people is growing in our county, in our state, and in the whole nation. The solution is beyond any of us as individuals. Yet, we can still show up, remember how deeply we care, bear witness.

This work is central to the mission and vision of this congregation. You have all been at it for so many years, that in some ways it has slipped into the background: a familiar, beautiful, and powerful part of our Tapestry of Love.

Let us remember its power and its purpose together.

In Faith,
Rev. Dana

UUCV's Rev. Dana Worsnop smilling
