A Beloved Community

On January 12, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) launched UU the Vote, its campaign focused on the 2020 elections. Join the effort and answer the call from UUA President, Susan Frederick-Gray for a gathering of UU congregations to stand for democracy.

UU Santa PaulaChalice UU, and UU Ventura have helped to create positive change in our communities throughout the years, including fighting for justice issues that we as Unitarian Universalists hold dear. Now, efforts are gearing up for the primary elections in March and the presidential and congressional elections in November. The Unitarian Universalist Association’s new “UU the Vote” effort is encouraging UUs to get involved.

We will provide a variety of ways to answer this call. Are you interested in finding out more or volunteering to help in any way? Contact Jimmy V.

Vote Forward Letters to Georgia

Writing letters is a great way to fight voter suppression and increase election turnout. It only takes a couple of minutes and a stamp to meaningfully increase the odds that a fellow citizen will vote. We’re targeting traditionally under-represented registered voters in Georgia who are unlikely to move soon and unlikely to vote.

Requesting Letters:

If you will be printing letters on your own, please send a request to Jimmy at: jimmy@uuventura.org. Lists can be produced in batches of 20 or more. If you will not be printing the letters, another team member will print them and coordinate their delivery to you as we will envelopes and stamps. Blue pens (recommended) and stickers can also be provided.

Envelope Writing:

Either electronically or in hard copy delivery, you receive a cover sheet listing the names and addresses, and a form letter to use for each name. At the bottom of each letter is the name of the addressee and the return address we use. We write in their names and there is a short paragraph for us to tell why it is important for us to vote.

If you choose to write all the envelopes first or the letters first, please be sure you match up with names on letters and envelopes. The campaign asks that we use blue ink to make it more personal. They suggest printing the words is better than using script. View this document for step by step instructions.

The reasons you vote could be to voice your values, make sure your voice is heard, exercise your right to vote etc. See this document for samples of responses (paragraphs, phrases, etc.) prepared by our volunteers. We’re a non-profit organization and the words need to be non-partisan.

Envelopes and Stamps:

Envelopes and stamps for each letter will be provided to you. The process for this is the same as when you receive pre-printed letters. Oxnard, Ventura, Ojai, and Santa Paula residents may send requests for delivery through Jimmy at: jimmy@uuventura.org.

Envelopes Kept Aside-Do Not Mail!

Please hold on to the addressed and stamped envelopes. We will pick them up for delivery to UU Ventura for handling.  We will create an easy way to get them all back. These are meant to go out in October. Please Do Not Mail them!!!

How to Donate

We’re asking everyone to hold off on making any more donations. This is temporary. Our goal of $2610 has been reached (woohoo!) and we need to evaluate the letter-writing campaign. We also want to honor the donors wishes and not exceed the money raised.

Supplies will continue to be provided. The rate of letter completion will determine how we move forward. We expect to make a decision by mid-August.

Giving Away Our Offering

Inreach/Outreach Committee

Since 2012, we’ve been giving away our entire offering each week. Instead of keeping it in the church, the money we raise helps people in the world around us. We do this as a way to be part of the change we want to see in the world… by helping others in our community and in our larger Unitarian Universalist movement. We decide who receives the offering by a vote of the whole congregation.
