Investing in Your Values

Generosity Team looks out for UUCVs funding, which primarily comes from the church’s members and friends These donations are the way to ensure that UUCV can act on our values in the wider world, whether through supporting social action, providing care and kindness to members or giving our children a place where they can grow up learning messages of acceptance and inclusion.

The Generosity Team’s Annual “Giving” campaign reaches out to members and attendees to ask for a financial commitment to the church for the coming year. This is really useful, so the rest of the church can know how much money to expect will be coming in. In addition, Team members investigate grants and other sources of funding.

Any member interested in joining the Generosity Team should contact Board President, Jim Merrill, or another member of the Board of Trustees.

Do UU Know?
Kappy Paulson has created a lovely Memorial Book honoring UUCV members who passed away in the past few years. To establish a starting point, it begins with Rev. Dana’s ministry to UUCV. The beginning of the scrapbook lists the names of people who passed away. The intent is to add pages to keep the book current going forward.
Each person who passes away is memorialized with a page in the book. Take time to view the red scrapbook located on the Joys & Sorrow’s table in the church entrance way.

Building a New Way
“How fun to meet the new folks (new to me) on this list. I look forward to getting to meet with them.”
That’s a quote from one of our canvassers this year. It perfectly describes why we are conducting a member-to-member canvass this year.
What’s a canvass, you ask? In one way, it’s another word for pledge drive, but more than that, it is an intent to connect with every member and friend of UUCV. It is as much about growing and deepening relationships as it is about asking you to renew your pledge for the coming year.
Every canvasser is a pledging member of UUCV, just like you, and is volunteering their time to meet with you both because this is important to the health of our congregation AND because they also are looking to deepen (or begin!) their relationship with you.
So look forward to the call from your canvasser this month to find a time to meet. Make it easy for them and answer your phone. Please return their call promptly if they leave a message. To paraphrase from Casablanca, “This may be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Building a New Way
We are “Building a New Way” using a new/old system for our Stewardship Drive, going back to what worked well many years ago. This year we will be talking face-to-face with you to hear your comments about what makes you grateful about your experiences with this church. These conversations allow you to share your feelings about your church involvement, and they help us all move into the future renewed and inspired. They are also times where we get to know each other better.
Please respond when canvas volunteers calls you in March to ask for an appointment to meet with you for your conversation, and to determine your level of financial support for next year. Yes, these visits will be about your pledges for the 2018-2019 operating funds, though they will also be about the church and how we create its mission together. Most people come away saying it was way more fun that they expected. (Miles better than, say, a call from the IRS about money….)
We, as a congregation, are constantly building a new way based upon love and generosity. Our sanctuary and classrooms are overflowing with people who want and need what we offer. Help us build our community of inclusion, acceptance, and understanding. Please take the time to respond and meet with one of our volunteers during this year’s member to member canvas. Your participation will remind you of how lucky we are to have each other and our shared vision of what each of us and the world needs.

Another Form of Stewardship
Stewardship is often described as the donation of time, talent and treasure to support an organization. With the recent fires, we saw another form of stewardship.
The church opened up and became a sanctuary for some evacuees. Emails went out updating us on the situation and offering resources. Childcare was provided when schools were closed. Congregation members brought food for an impromptu potluck and opened their homes. We took care of each other. This is also stewardship, a stewardship that can exist because we have all worked at maintaining and building this UUCV community.
Thank you for being in this community and being such generous stewards to our community and to each other.

Did UU Know?
There are two reasons UU Churches have an annual pledge campaign each year. The first is obvious. We need to know what our members will pledge to donate for the next church year so we can have good, current information to construct a useful budget. Second, and not so obvious, we need to connect with each other about why we value our church involvement so much that we agree to make ongoing donations.
For next year our annual pledge campaign will be a one-on-one canvass. Guided by our minister, our stewardship team will talk face-to-face with every member about their reasons for being members and for renewing their pledge for another year. This type of campaign is considered valuable for many reasons and one of the most difficult to implement for one reason. We are all so busy we don’t want to add another meeting to our schedule. We hope you remember this article when another member contacts you in March to set a time to meet. It’s about you and our shared lives. Please say yes or return our call.
Additionally, it will take many volunteers to reach our entire community during this campaign and we need all the help we can get. Contact Maura Raffensperger, stewardship team leader at 616-2466 to discuss how you can help
